The Breast Unit is currently based on the Kingston Hospital. It is run by a multidisciplinary team including two Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons, two Advance Nurse Practitioners, two Consultant Oncologist, two consultant Breast Pathologists, six consultant Breast Radiologists, and four Breast Care Nurses working to give a first class service using evidence based protocols and ensuring the implementation of policies and guidelines originating from the Royal Marsden Partners.

It has excellent imaging equipment including two digital mammography units, two high frequency ultrasound machines, with capability for vacuum biopsy in addition to standard core biopsy, plus radiological expertise in the reporting of breast MRI.

The comprehensive pathology services on site include on site Her-2 testing, 24 hour turnaround of diagnostic core biopsies and same day reporting of fine needle aspirates when required. Intraoperative frozen section analysis is also available for selected theatre cases.

The Breast Unit is one of the busier units in the region and treats approximately 280 new breast cancers per annum including a 30% referral from the Regional Breast Screening Services with whom there is a close working relationship including a joint monthly Radiology meeting and close collaboration regarding final pathology and outcome of treatment.

There are 4 breast cancer nurse specialists who in addition to supporting patients through the diagnostic and treatment pathway offer nurse led lymphoedema, wound, family history and tattooing clinics.

Medical oncology services are provided in partnership with the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, with clinics and chemotherapy delivered on the Kingston site. Radiotherapy clinics and treatment are provided at the Royal Marsden, with patients offered a choice of either the Chelsea or Sutton sites. There is weekly Clinical oncology input to the multidisciplinary meeting either in person or via video-link.

The unit treats the full range of benign and malignant breast conditions and provides a full range of surgical procedures including sentinel node biopsy, immediate and delayed breast reconstruction and oncoplastic breast conservation. Free flap reconstruction is provided jointly with the Plastic Surgery team at the Royal Marsden, and facilitated by attendance at an alternate weekly Oncoplastic MDT. The weekly MDT meeting and quarterly Breast Management meeting achieve a cohesive team approach with excellent working relationships across all the specialties.

The unit runs One-stop Clinics , Joint Oncology Clinics, and follow up clinics each week. Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Breast Service has recently implemented nurse-led Open Access Follow Up (OAFU) for patients who have previously received treatment for breast cancer and fit within specified clinical inclusion criteria. OAFU is a nurse-led model of care which replaces the ‘traditional’ model of consultant follow up. The traditional model of consultant-led follow up includes patients attending prescriptive follow-up appointments, even when asymptomatic. Instead, within OAFU, patient experience is improved by giving access to multidisciplinary support post-treatment, which is centred around when patients require it.  It forms part of the strategy to follow up care after treatment, endorsed by Royal Marsden Partners.
