In recognition of the important role volunteers play in improving patients’ and their families’ experience of care, charitable funds enabled a Volunteering Services Project Manager to be appointed during 2014. This appointment led to the establishment of a Head of Volunteering, a substantive post funded by Kingston Hopsital.
Currently there are about 450 active volunteers aged 16-94 across twelve high impact programmes, all of whom receive extensive training, specific to their roles, which include Dining Companions, Discharge Support Volunteers, Dementia Therapeutic Activities and Emergency Department Volunteers.
Charitable support has also enabled the development of a strong brand for volunteering with the collateral including distinctive T-shirts, recruitment and promotional materials, bespoke events and awards for volunteers. They tell the story of a vibrant volunteering culture and showcase to staff, volunteers and community that volunteers are a valued part of the Kingston Hospital workforce.
