Tinnitus Support Group

Tinnitus Logo

Tinnitus is a sensation of hearing a sound where there is no external source for that sound. In most cases, it is a symptom generated by the brain, spontaneously. Everyone's tinnitus is different. Many people hear a ringing sound, others a whistling, buzzing or crackling, but there are endless variations. The noise may be in one or both ears, in the head, or it may be difficult to pinpoint its exact location. The noise may be low, medium or high pitched. There may be a single noise or two or more components. The noise may be continuous or intermittent.

Our Groups offers a caring community of like-minded individuals who reassure and support one another. Our Group serves to provide comfort, reduce isolation and improve coping skills by:

  • Providing a warm, accessible and safe place for respectfull sharing of experiences and coping strategies;
  • Providing opportunities for people to connect with each other in a calm and reassuring atmosphere;
  • Offering generalised advice in an open, empathetic and non-judmental manner. This advice is not a substitute for medical advice;
  • Giving advice and recommendations to the hospital for the development of information leaflet relating to tinnitus, hearing loss and hyperacusis.

The Group is open to people experiencing tinnitus directly, as well as to their partners and family members. Group meeting are unstructured in nature, so to allow attendees to lead the course of the meetings. Sometimes guest speakers are to be invited. During the meetings, people are encouraged to share experiences and feelings, actively participate, respect the need for confidentiality and give everyone a chance to speak.
