Finding the Evidence Training

To help with the information needs of evidence-based practice and clinical governance, we provide training to enable you to get the most out of the electronic resources available to library users.

Introduction Session

The introductory session will look at the different resources available through the library, examining what information the resources can provide and how they can be used for different purposes.

The library runs group sessions or can provide 1to1 or small group sessions on request.

Advanced Session

The advanced session looks at using Healthcare Databases Advance Search (HDAS) to search for journal articles to inform practise, research and study.

Session outline:

  • Introduction to databases (including Medline, CINAHL, Embase, Kings Fund, PsycInfo and the Cochrane Library)
  • Forming your search strategy
  • Accessing the databases
  • Searching techniques
  • Retrieving your results
  • Electronic Journal retrieval

Training Objectives:

  • Select the most appropriate database for your needs
  • Formulate a simple search strategy using both subject headings and 'free text'
  • Conduct a search
  • Understand what a thesaurus is and how to use it to improve your search results
  • Refine your search strategy to get the results you want
  • Display, select, save and print your search results
