Reading Research – An introduction to critical appraisal

The library runs two training sessions looking at how to read research using critical appraisal techniques. One session focuses on quantitative research and the other on qualitative research.

Both sessions - Outline

Both sessions will look at:

  • Introduction to critical appraisal
  • What is critical appraisal?
  • Tips for success
  • CASP checklist
  • Differences between quantitative and qualitative research

Quantitative will include:

  • Outline of different types of quantitative research
  • Statistical methods - P-values, Power calculations, intention to treat, confidence intervals

Qualitative will include:

  • Outline of different methods of qualitative research.

Advanced booking is required as you will be required to read the paper which will be appraised during the session.
