Maternity services at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have achieved the highest levels of safety standards under a robust accreditation scheme for patient safety in maternity.
This week the Hospital’s maternity services received a Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) assessment, which looks at how well the service is organised and governed and how safe the care is. There are four levels and Kingston has been awarded with the highest rating – level 3.
Anna Dellaway, Head of Midwifery said:
"This achievement highlights what a fantastic Maternity service we have on offer at Kingston Hospital and for women who are due to give birth here or are considering giving birth here, they can be safe in the knowledge that our standards of patient care and safety are exceptional. We are incredibly proud to have been awarded with CNST Level 3 and so many people in the maternity team have worked very hard to ensure that we achieved the highest possible rating. The assessment usually takes two days but, due to a great deal of preparation and transparency, it only took a day and a half. The assessors also said that our audit report was the best they had ever seen.
The Trust’s maternity services were assessed against five standards (organisation, clinical care, high risk conditions, communication, and postnatal and new born care) each with 10 criteria. The assessment process found that the Trust has an effective risk management system in place to support the delivery of quality improvements in patient care and the safety of women and their babies, and that staff take a proactive approach to improving safety in our maternity services.
The ranking also has a financial benefit to the Trust with the annual insurance premium paid to the NHSLA by the Trust reduced by £264,000, enabling more funds to be directed towards improving patient care.
In December 2013, Kingston Hospital’s maternity services were rated as the best in London and among the top 20% in the country by mums who had given birth.
Around 6,000 babies are delivered every year at Kingston Hospital and the maternity unit is the second busiest single site unit in London.
